Wolff: "If it weren't for that buoy, Lewis would have won in Abu Dhabi"

Wolff: "Se non ci fosse stata quella boa, Lewis avrebbe vinto ad Abu Dhabi"

Tóth Krisztián Márk |

You may all remember Lewis Hamilton's unfortunate qualifying on Saturday. The seven-time world champion was eliminated in Q1, but in the race he climbed up to fourth place from last place.

Although the team's preliminary simulations indicated that the maximum achievable would be sixth place, Hamilton proved this prediction wrong and, according to his (former) boss, if it had not been for that unfortunate incident during qualifying, he could have won:

“I always try to look at events impartially, with an analytical eye, and in my opinion, if that buoy had not unfortunately been in his way and he had finished the qualification further ahead, Lewis would have fought for the victory. However, this leaves no trace in me, as we have achieved so many successes and victories together that what has happened now, or has not happened, does not affect these and our relationship in any way.”

But you have to give him his due: He competed as a world champion in Abu Dhabi. He started from 16th place and with patience and strategy he climbed up to fourth place, ahead of the Red Bulls. For me, that is a world champion performance, no doubt about it!” - praised his driver Toto Wolff for the last time.
