This is, to put it mildly, unprofessional, and at this level it is rather ridiculous, something to which Villeneuve could not remain indifferent:
“McLaren said something incredible after the Brazilian Grand Prix, in fact they started talking about the fact that for them it is not the individual title that matters, but the constructors’ title. And that it has always been like this… It is more than strange, given that only hardened losers say things like that, and apparently McLaren is a loser. I admit that there is money in the constructors’ title, but in reality that is all, nobody cares who wins.
In the end, people will only remember who wins the drivers’ race, and in their eyes the constructors’ title is won by whoever also wins the individual title. The constructors’ victory is for the sector and for the wallet, it’s good on paper, but I repeat: nobody cares… It’s a shame for this attitude, because they are having a fantastic season, and the fact of having forced Max Verstappen and Red Bull Racing to fight is already a great result,” said Villeneuve with his usual sincerity.
