A Mercedes engineer, one of the most recognized, told the New York Times how the seven-time world champion became so successful.
According to Andrew Shovlin, it wasn't his work ethic, obsession or desire to improve that played a key role, but rather a sick phobia of losing!
“I don’t think there is another driver like him. He has a completely unique vision, I really enjoyed working with him. He is extremely dedicated to success and demands the same from everyone else. But what made him really great, his real superpower, is his almost pathological phobia of defeat. He is terribly disgusted by it, so he does everything to avoid it, constantly influencing the people around him to do so. I don’t know another competitor who has this mentality so present. It is obvious that we all hate losing, but the anxiety that comes with it and the desire to fight against it puts Lewis Hamilton way above the rest,” - he said admiringly about their former driver Shovlin.
