If it weren't for Michael Schumacher, probably no one in the world would know how to put Kerpen on the map. But Schumacher is there, he was there, and hopefully he will be there again - this should be understood only by the city council that is not willing to award him the title of honorary citizen.
The issue is not new, both the industry and the fans have long been trying to obtain this recognition for the seven-time world champion with various means of pressure. In vain... Local politics has once again taken a stand as a sort of Christmas surprise, and it could not have done so in a more disgusting way:
"There is no order of merit in Kerpen. The introduction of the order of merit and the associated title of honorary citizen is entirely the task of the city council," said Mayor Dieter Spürck.
"On March 19, 2024, the city unanimously decided to postpone the topic of awarding the title of honorary citizen to Michael Schumacher. The groups and representatives outside the groups must first vote in a group vote whether to introduce such a title. Since then, no application has been submitted on this topic." - explained the "first" man from Kerpen, whose colleagues further added with statements such as "currently it makes no sense" and "where does honorary citizenship begin and where does it end"...
