Lewis Hamilton disputes the idea that he went off the track due to driver error on the opening lap of the United States Grand Prix. The seven-time world champion attributes his retirement to a technical failure.
After the race, Hamilton vented and asked for a more thorough inspection by the team. Not only did the developments not work, but the car was also worse than before the four-week break:
“There was a similar situation in the first free practice session, when I went off the track at turn three. It is extremely rare, I have never gone off the track on this track. You saw that George Russell also had similar problems on Saturday, but he went back to the old specification, so there could be a problem with the new development package. The car bounces all the time, so if I don't go off the track at turn three, I would have done it at another corner or another time. There was something wrong with the car, I suffered all weekend. I have never gone off the track in a race in my life. It wasn't because I didn't concentrate, but because the technique is not good. It's frustrating, but that's how it is, now I'm rather concentrating on being able to get back in the car on Friday,” Hamilton complained.
