Since Alfa Romeo's exit, the industry and fans have been wondering if Valtteri Bottas will return to Mercedes. There will be a return, but not as we thought so far!
If former F1 driver and current insider Christian Fittipaldi's information is correct, Bottas could return as Toto Wolff's right-hand man, in a sort of mentor position. The right-hand man metaphor is not an exaggeration at all, as according to Fittipaldi, Bottas will inherit the job of Jerome d'Ambrosio, who will move to Ferrari.
Just how big a leap this is for the Finn is demonstrated by the fact that d'Ambrosio was considered a serious candidate for the role of Mercedes team principal after Wolff's retirement. As deputy, he also drove Mercedes on several occasions. If the news is true, it could also be great news for new signing Andrea Kimi Antonelli, who has a great relationship with the Finn, and there could be no one better than Valtteri Bottas to help the rookie settle in.
